Dental SEO Case Study from California: 60x Website Clicks in 12 Months

Mesa Dental is a general, cosmetic, and implant dentistry clinic in San Diego, California and led by Dr. Qadeer. Since 2002, the practice has helped thousands of patients across San Diego improve the appearance of their smiles.

Over the years, the practice has built a strong local reputation. Besides maintaining an average rating of 4.9 stars across Google, Yelp, and Facebook, the clinic was also recognized for its exceptional service quality. Dr. Qadeer has been named a San Diego Magazine Top Doctor six times.

The problem was that Mesa Dental’s online visibility didn’t reflect the reputation it had built offline. The clinic had low visibility for high-intent dental searches in San Diego, leaving significant room to capture more qualified traffic through organic and local search.

Project Overview

Mesa Dental wasn’t a newly established practice struggling to build credibility. It had already earned patients’ trust offline, maintained an established website, and offered a broad range of dental services.

However, its online visibility didn’t reflect the reputation it had built. The opportunity was clear: turn the practice’s existing reputation into stronger online visibility across the searches patients were already using.

We designed the campaign to strengthen Mesa Dental’s SEO foundation, improve local search visibility, increase exposure for high-intent dental searches, and grow qualified organic traffic through sustained organic and Local SEO work.

Goals We Set for The Campaign

To improve Mesa Dental’s online visibility, we established a set of measurable goals at the start of the campaign. The goals were primarily focused on organic visibility, Local SEO performance, technical foundation, content growth, and qualified patient acquisition.

Initially, the campaign was planned for a 12-month timeline. However, the timeline was extended based on positive progress. Here is a snapshot of the goals and timelines we targeted:

GoalInitial Target
Improve Google Map Pack visibility for high-intent searches Achieve Top 3 rankings for core keywords such as “dentist San Diego” and “dental implants San Diego”
Increase non-branded organic search visibilityGrow organic clicks by 150–250% from the baseline
Strengthen Google Business Profile (GBP) PerformanceIncrease qualified calls, direction requests, and website visits from local search
Resolve critical technical SEO issuesImprove crawlability, indexation, site performance, internal linking, and structured data
Improve priority dental service pagesStrengthen rankings, content depth, search relevance, and conversion opportunities
Build topical authority around core dental servicesPublish 2–4 high-quality content pieces per month and develop supporting topic clusters
Strengthen local authority and reputation signalsImprove citation consistency, review acquisition, and local search relevance
Improve the organic user journeyStrengthen page structure, calls to action, and conversion opportunities for organic visitors

Project Note

Mesa Dental continued its engagement beyond the initial 12-month timeline, extending the work into an ongoing SEO and Local SEO campaign.

The extended campaign was primarily focused on maintaining existing rankings, expanding local search visibility, developing new content opportunities, and continuing to optimize the website long-term.

Project Timeline –

  • Initial SEO campaign: February 2025 – January 2026
  • Extended SEO engagement: February 2026 – June 2026
  • Total project duration: 17 months

What We Found (Visibility Before the Campaign)

Before the campaign began, Mesa Dental’s website had very limited organic search visibility for high-intent dental searches in the San Diego market. With an average Google position of 84, most targeted searches were landing well outside the first page of results.

1. Google Search Console

The website was also failing to capture high-intent dental searches in the San Diego market. Google Search Console showed that the site was generating only 122 organic clicks from 15.6K impressions, with an average CTR of 0.78%.

This baseline shows a clear gap between their established reputation and organic search visibility. This was our opportunity to capture more qualified traffic through SEO.

Here’s a preview of Mesa dental’s online performance in Google Search Console before we took over the optimization.

Google Search Console showing Mesa Dental's 122 clicks and 84 average position

2. Google Business Profile (GBP)

As for their Google Business Profile (GBP), there were clear signs of low visibility. In the last 6 months, their GBP was only able to generate 169 calls, 291 direction requests, and 246 website clicks, which clearly didn’t reflect the strong reputation they’ve built.

3. Site-wide SEO Audit

We also did a full SEO audit. The audit included technical + on-page + local + content review.

We marked the severity based on access to public data. Where we needed authenticated tool access (like Search Console, GBP dashboard), we marked them as “Needs Verification” as we needed to check them before we confirm the client.

4. Website Loading Speed

We also check the loading speed for their existing website across devices. On mobile, we recorded the performance score (Pagespeed) as 34 on mobile and 37 on desktop.

5. Technical SEO

We reviewed Mesa Dental’s website for technical factors that could affect crawling, indexing, search visibility, and user experience.

The audit identified several areas for improvement. Some of them required verification through tools like Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights before we could confirm their impact.

Audit AreaFinding / StatusDetail
Core Web Vitals / real load timeNeeds verificationNitroPack was active, which typically helps, but actual LCP, INP, and CLS performance could not be confirmed. Needed PageSpeed Insights or CrUX/Search Console data with site verification.
Index coverage / crawl errorsNeeds verificationIndex coverage and crawl-error data wasn’t visible from a public fetch. Needed access to verified Search Console property
XML sitemapMinor IssueA /sitemap/ page existed and was linked from the footer; Needed to confirm whether this was the XML sitemap submitted to Google, or only a human-readable one.
Structured data (schema)Needs verificationNo schema markup was visible in the fetched page content; a Rich Results Test check is needed to confirm whether Dentist/LocalBusiness/FAQ schema existed.
JS-dependent contentNeeds verificationStatistic counters and some images didn’t resolve without JavaScript execution. As Google generally renders JS, Needed URL Inspection to confirm that important content is accessible and indexable as rendered.
Content freshness metadataModerate IssueThe article:modified_time value on the blog index showed February 2025, and didn’t match visibly newer posts listed on that page through Jul 2026. Needed to review and update the metadata.

6. On-Page SEO

Next, we moved into the on-page audit. Our goal was to identify issues that were affecting search relevance and content quality.

We found several areas where the site’s messaging could be made more focused and user-oriented. For the page-level issues such as service-page depth and image optimization, we needed a broader crawl to verify.

Audit AreaFinding / StatusDetail
Title vs. H1 mismatchMajor IssueThe homepage <title> and H1 was focusing on separate messages. Rather than conveying a clear and consistent statement for both search engines and the users, they were telling separate stories, confusing the algorithm and the visitors.
Keyword-heavy brand fieldsModerate IssueBoth the og:site_name and the browser tab title were highlighting a long keyword string (“Best Dentist In San Diego CA | Family Dentist San Diego CA | Mesa Dental”) instead of clearly stating the brand name.
Repetitive homepage copyModerate IssueTo highlight keywords, the homepage repeatedly mentioned phrases such as “dentist San Diego” and “dental clinic San Diego”. The copy was clearly written for search engines first, a practice that isn’t recommended anymore.
Service page depthNeeds verificationThere were dedicated services pages for all the core treatments offered. However, we couldn’t conduct a page-by-page review to check word count, content depth, unique H1s, and internal linking. We recommended a full crawl.
Image alt textNeeds verificationWe found visible alt text on trust badges, but all of them were keyword-stuffed. For instance, one of them used “BBB Accredited Business Mesa Dental – Holistic Dentist San Diego”. To assess all the image alt texts site-wide, we needed a complete rendered-page crawl.

7. Local SEO & Google Business Profile

When we reviewed Mesa Dental’s local search signals across their website and GBP, we focused on NAP consistency, brand identity, review consolidation, GBP optimization, and local content opportunities.

We were able to identify a critical mismatch in their NAP data, and a few more improvement areas.

Audit AreaFinding / StatusDetail
NAP data inconsistencyCritical IssueThe live site, BBB, and the main Yelp listing highlighted 6215 Beadnell Way, San Diego, CA 92117 as their address. However, WebMD Doctor Finder listed the address as 7625 Mesa College Dr, Ste 100, San Diego, CA 92111 – a clear mismatch.
Whether those were outdated/duplicate listings or two distinct clinics, we needed to reconcile the issue immediately so Google doesn’t blend the entities.
Brand-name collisionMajor IssueWe found at least three unrelated San Diego practices using the name “Mesa Dental/Mesa Family Dental/Mesa Dental Group”. This indicated that Mesa Dental wasn’t operating in a vacuum. Other San Diego practices had similar names, increasing the risk of citation and review mix-ups.
Review consolidationModerate IssueReview count varied wildly by source. We found 443 reviews on Yelp, while aggregators reported around 1549-2257 reviews. This discrepancy may indicate that either the reviews were split across more than one GBP/Yelp profile, or third-party sources were reporting outdated or mismatched data.
Data Consistency across GBPNeeds verificationWe couldn’t complete a direct GBP audit as we needed dashboard access. As a result, Primary/secondaty categories, Q&A activities, posting cadence, and photo volume/recency remained unverified.
Service-area / neighborhood pagesOpportunityThere were no dedicated neighbourhood pages on the website. This indicated potential opportunities to address location-specific pages (like Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Linda Vista, Pacific Beach) and search intent after core NAP and GBP issues are resolved.

8. Content Optimizations

After the local SEO audit, we moved onto Mesa Dental’s content. We reviewed their existing content to assess publishing consistency, topical coverage, and how effectively their core service pages were supported by informational content.

The audit found a consistent publishing cadence, while the larger opportunity was to organize that content into stronger topic clusters and connect it more effectively to commercial pages.

Audit AreaFinding / StatusDetail
Blog cadenceStrengthMesa dental was consistent in publishing their content through mid-2026. Their content covered relevant patient-intent topics such as implants vs. All-on-4, teeth-whitening safety, veneers, and gum-disease care for implant patients.
This indicated a potential strength that could be honed further.
Topical authority / pillar contentOpportunityWe found no pillar content for each of their core services. This highlighted a strong growth potential as building pillar pages (For instance, a comprehensive dental implants hub could link every implant-related post and page) would increase their topical authority, content depth, and ranking potential.
Internal linking from blog to service pagesNeeds verificationWe couldn’t complete a page-by-page crawl to confirm whether relevant blog posts consistently link to matching commercial service pages using descriptive, contextually relevant anchor text.

9. Off-Page SEO & Reputation Audit

Next, we turned to review Mesa Dental’s publicly visible reputation and off-page signals, including review strength, third-party recognition, backlinks, and citation coverage.

This showed us that the practice already had strong reputation signals, while backlink and citation performance required deeper tool-based analysis before we could draw any conclusion.

Audit AreaFinding / StatusDetail
Review volume & ratingStrengthThis was the strongest trust signal that indicated Mesa Dental’s perceived reputation. They had a compelling 4.9 star rating compared to the industry average of 4.4 stars from the San Diego dentist-category.
This meant that the clinic was on the right path, and just needed a little push in the right direction to become more visible online.
Third-party recognitionStrengthDr. Qadeer has been featured as a San Diego Magazine Top Doctor across six years: 2017, 2018, 2020, 2024, 2025, and 2026. Mesa Dental also held accreditation from institutes like ADA, AGD, CDA, AACD, and SDCDS.
This highlighted that the practice was backed by strong credentials and had the recognition needed to increase their online visibility.
Backlink profileNeeds verificationWe couldn’t reliably assess the referring-domain volume, link quality, anchor-text distribution, and competitor backlink gaps. We needed a licensed backlink analysis tool such as Ahrefs or Semrush for that.
Directory/citation footprintNeeds verificationWe also couldn’t complete a full 40–60 directory citation sweep to find any discrepancy. However, the NAP data mismatch we found earlier indicated that this field needed our attention.

10. Website Health

The website health was 34% when we started the project, indicating several improvement areas.

11. Existing Website Keyword Rankings

Before we started our SEO campaign, Mesa dental had very limited organic visibility. Only 3 of 74 tracked keywords ranked on Google’s first page, while 66 ranked beyond position 20, and none of them were targeting high-intent local dental searches.

This meant they had little to no visibility for searches that could drive qualified dental traffic.

Ranking BandKeywords at BaselineShare of Tracked Keywords
Positions 1 to 311.4%
Positions 4 to 1022.7%
Positions 11 to 2056.8%
Positions 21 to 501824.3%
Positions 51 to 1004864.9%
Total 74100%

The data indicated that only a mere 4.1% tracked keywords were ranking on page one, and nearly 65% ranked within position 51-100. This created a massive improvement area where we could improve organic visibility, strengthen topical authority, and capture more relevant dental leads.

12. Google Maps Rankings

We also checked Mesa Dental’s local visibility. Just like the organic results, the clinic also had very limited visibility in Google’s Local Pack for its target local search terms. None of the 17 tracked keywords ranked in the Top 3, and only one reached the Top 10. The remaining 16 keywords ranked outside the Top 10.

This significantly reduced their exposure in Google Maps and limited the chance to receive calls, direction requests, and appointment enquiries.

Positions 11 to 20211.8%
Positions 21 to 50529.4%
Not Ranking (50+)952.9%
Total 17100%

This report highlighted that more than half (52.9%) did not rank within the tracked top 50 positions. As a result, improving local visibility became a central opportunity for the campaign.

Key Growth Challenges

After the initial audit was complete, we identified these key growth challenges limiting Mesa Dental’s organic and local search performance:

  • Limited visibility for high-intent dental keywords.
  • Low click-through rate (0.78%).
  • Poor keyword targeting in service pages.
  • Weak Google Maps visibility.
  • Low organic search engagement
  • On-page optimization and technical SEO gaps
  • Entity inconsistencies across GBP and other platforms
  • Weak content architecture across the site

Together, these findings showed that Mesa Dental’s strong offline reputation was not being fully translated into search visibility.

So, the campaign needed to address the technical and on-page foundation first, strengthen local search signals, improve priority service pages, organize existing content into stronger topical structures, and build greater visibility across organic and Google Maps results.

Our SEO Implementation & Optimization Process

Following the initial SEO audit, we developed our SEO campaign around the specific gaps identified across Mesa Dental’s technical foundation, on-page elements, keyword research, local search signals, service pages, content architecture, and other authority-building activities.

Rather than depending on a single SEO tactic, we focused on addressing the underlying issues first, then expanded into keyword targeting, service-page optimization, content development, internal linking, and authority-building activities.

The purpose of our campaign was to improve how search engines crawled and understood the site while creating more relevant opportunities to appear for high-intent dental searches in San Diego.

Let’s explore how we made that happen:

1. We Restructured Their Technical SEO Foundation

We started with the foundation, technical SEO. With a goal to improve Mesa Dental’s crawlability, indexation, website performance, and search engine accessibility, we prioritized resolving indexing barriers and improving page delivery.

Our approach focused on strengthening the technical signals. that help search engines discover, understand, and process the site’s content. Here’s a simplified overview of our technical SEO work

  • Resolved indexing-related issues to ensure that search engines can discover, crawl, and index important pages properly

2. We Identified New Keywords And Optimized Their SEO Strategy

After the fundamental work was done, we used in-depth keyword research to identify the search opportunities most relevant to Mesa Dental’s services, local market, and business goals.

Rather than targeting keywords based on search volume alone, we evaluated search intent, competition, business relevance, and the role each query could play within the site’s content and service architecture.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Identified high-value search opportunities across core dental services, local searches, and informational topics for the clinic’s service pages, location pages, and blog content.
  • Analyzed search volume, keyword difficulty, competition, and search intent to prioritize the most valuable keywords.

  • To avoid repetitive exact-match targeting, categorized primary, secondary, and supporting keywords for the priority pages.
  • Grouped related keywords into topic clusters around core services to improve content organization and topical authority between pillar pages, service pages, and supporting articles.
  • Mapped keywords to the most relevant website pages based on search intent, ensuring informational, commercial, transactional, and navigational queries match the right content type.
  • Identified content gaps and additional opportunities through competitor keyword analysis.
  • Prioritized high-intent keywords that could improve both organic visibility and conversion opportunities.

  • Used keyword insights to guide content and service-page optimization, helping align the site’s information architecture with the most relevant search queries.

3. We Optimized Their Key Pages for Better Visibility

Next, we moved onto the on-page issues we found during the audit. A full-scale on-page SEO optimization was implemented across the site to improve search relevance, content clarity, and user experience.

We also focused on aligning the page content to the search intent and making it easy for the visitors to navigate the website. Here’s what the workflow looks like:

  • Reworked the title tags and H1s around primary search intent to improve SERP visibility and CTR. We ensured that each page had a clear and consistent topic while avoiding unnecessarily long or keyword-heavy messaging.

Optimized the meta descriptions with unique, relevant copies designed to accurately reflect page content. We also made them engaging so qualified searchers are encouraged to click through from the SERPs.

Optimized images by adding descriptive file names. We replaced unnecessarily keyword-heavy alt text with accurate descriptions to enhance accessibility and relevance.

4. We Improved Their Local Footprint

After receiving the necessary access, we implemented the local SEO improvements identified during the audit. We addressed those issues to increase their local relevance, citation consistency, reputation signals, and visibility across Google Search and Maps.

We focused particularly on resolving business-information inconsistencies, improving their GBP performance and helping them generate more qualified local traffic. Here’s how that looks in action:

  • Reviewed and optimized their GBP information including business categories, services, descriptions, photos, Q&As, and posts to establish consistency.

Standardized their business information across relevant local listings to address the NAP inconsistency we found during the audit and to ensure consistent business-entity signals.

5. We Optimized Their Content for Semantics

Now, it was time to focus on the content itself. We optimized and expanded existing content to better satisfy search intent, strengthen topical relevance, and provide more complete answers to relevant search queries.

Our work focused on improving the usefulness and structure of priority pages while building clearer semantic relationships between services, supporting topics, and related entities. Here’s how we did it:

  • Improved thin and outdated content by adding more relevant information, updating existing sections, and addressing gaps that limited the page’s usefulness.
  • Optimized priority page content with relevant information to ensure better search intent alignment, increase topical relevance, improve ranking potential, and position the content to the different stages of the patient journey.

Added missing subtopics, and supporting sections to make the content more comprehensive without adding information just to increase length.

  • Improved topical coverage through incorporating closely related concepts, entities, questions, and supporting terms around each primary topic.
  • Optimized content structure and formatting with clearer headings, shorter sections, lists, and other skimmable elements to improve readability and engagement.
  • Followed a human-first content approach by avoiding repetitive exact-match keywords and placing related semantic keywords naturally throughout the content.

Improved content clarity, contextual completeness, and entity relationships to make the content easier for search engines and AI-powered systems to interpret and surface for relevant queries.

  • Leveraged internal linking to strengthen semantic relationships between related pages. We connected each core service with supporting informational content and related topics via proper contextual links.

6. We Build Their Authority Through Off-Page SEO & Link Building

Lastly, we moved onto off-page SEO optimization. With a goal to solidify Mesa Dental’s authority and local relevance, we focused on incorporating high quality, contextually relevant link and citation opportunities.

Since we couldn’t complete a full audit without access to a licensed backlink analysis platform, we prioritized relevance, authority, and sustainable acquisition rather than link volume alone. Our workflow looked similar to this:

  • Analyzed competitor backlink opportunities to identify relevant websites, industry resources, local publications, and directories that could provide meaningful link-building opportunities.
Backlink sheet listing business directory placements with domain ratings

Acquired relevant backlinks from quality sources. We prioritized topical relevance, contextual placement, credibility of the referring domain, and long-term value.

  • Developed a balanced backlink strategy using contextual links, local citations, industry listings, and relevant directory placements.
  • Prioritized natural, value-driven link acquisition over low-quality, automated, or spam-oriented link-building tactics.

  • Maintained a healthy backlink profile by distributing natural anchor-text variations across acquired links. We used a mix of branded, URL, generic, and relevant partial-match anchors while avoiding exact-match commercial keywords.
  • Periodically reviewed backlink quality to identify  and remove potentially irrelevant or low-quality placements that could negatively impact SEO performance.

7. We Reaudited The Website After Optimization

After we fixed every issue, we checked Mesa Dental’s website again to measure the improvement, especially in their website’s health.

Project Outcome

After the initially proposed 12-month was over, the campaign produced substantial improvements across both organic search and Google Business Profile performance.

More importantly, the gains were visible across multiple stages of the search journey: from impressions and rankings to website visits, phone calls, direction requests, and other local actions.

Website Profile Performance

Compared to the campaign baseline, Mesa Dental’s organic search performance improved significantly through continuous SEO optimization.

For instance, their organic clicks increased from 122 to 7,312, representing roughly 60× the baseline traffic. Search impressions grew from 15.6K to 308.5K, while average position improved from 84 to 12.5, indicating a significant increase in overall search visibility.

Google Business Profile Performance

Their local search performance also got a massive improvement during the campaign. In fact, we saw the strongest gain here. Our continuous optimization and Local SEO efforts resulted in:

1. Overview

Mesa Dental’s Google Business Profile started with only 706 overviews. After the campaign, we saw a substantial increase here. The overview count went up to 35,129.

In other words, their profile activity increased nearly 50x and improved the chance of getting calls and appointment bookings.

Final Results

Over the course of one year, Our SEO campaign delivered significant improvements in both organic search performance and local visibility.

Mesa Dental didn’t need to build credibility from scratch. It needed to make the credibility it had already earned more visible and accessible through search.

As a result, we focused our SEO campaign on closing that gap combining technical SEO, local entity optimization, service-page improvements, content strategy, and authority building to strengthen the practice’s visibility across organic search and Google Maps.
